Providence City is a small city located approximately 1 mile south of Logan in Cache County. Here are a few facts to give a better insight into this growing community nestled beneath the mountains.

History

Providence City is the second oldest city in Cache County. It had its beginnings in 1859 when a small group settled near a spring rising from the bed of a creek. They called the settlement Spring Creek. In November of 1859, members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints visited the settlement. They suggested the name be changed to "Providence" because it was a providential and lovely place.

Population

During its first 100 years, Providence maintained a rural atmosphere. Now, in 2008, the population is nearing 6,500, but still has the feeling of a rural community with the benefits of a metropolitan area.

Business/Industry

Providence is a small city in the midst of transition. With its central location, Providence has been a bedroom community for those working in Logan, Ogden and Salt Lake City. During the past 10 years, Providence has experienced a burst of growth. Besides residential growth, commercial development has been on the rise. We have seen the addition of medical and office complexes, a theater and restaurants, as well as many smaller businesses. Even with all the growth, Providence still maintains a rural flavor with large residential lots, animal rights and open space. Visitors find a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and high quality of life.

Traditions

Providence has a rich heritage with a wonderful mix of German, Swiss, and English forefathers. Providence has become known for the delicious sauerkraut made by residents for the past hundred years. A turkey/sauerkraut dinner is held annually as part of the City Celebration each fall.

Education

Providence has a large elementary school and one of Cache County School District’s four middle schools, Spring Creek Middle School, is located in Providence. The high school students attend Mountain Crest High School in Hyrum.

Cultural Events

Providence is close enough to Logan to enjoy opportunities provided by Utah State University, the Ellen Eccles Theater, and Logan Canyon. With Salt Lake City only 90 miles to the south, Providence residents take advantage of activities such as sporting events (Utah Jazz-basketball; Salt Lake Stingers -baseball; Utah Grizzlies - hockey); musical and theatrical events (Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Capitol Theater, Abravanel Hall, Delta Center); and world class events (home of the 2002 Winter Olympics).
